Maintenance
pH electrodes have a certain life expectancy, however, proper care and maintenance can help extend the life of your electrode.

Age
An electrode's speed and sensitivity is expected to decrease with age. A decrease in performance should result in replacement of the electrode.

Maintenance and Use

The life of a pH electrode depends on proper preparation, cleaning, calibration, and storage. Electrodes need to be properly maintained with clean electrolyte regularly. Maximize the life of your electrode by following these guidelines.

Refill or Replace
  • Electrolyte level must be higher than sample level to ensure flow and avoid contamination
  • To avoid crystallization and impurities, replace the electrolyte once per month

Cleaning
Without proper cleaning, a coating will form on the glass bulb that will cause errors in measurements and drifting values. To maintain a clean electrode, be sure to rinse with distilled water before and after every measurement. Do not wipe it with a paper towel. For non-aqueous or dirty samples, first rinse with a solvent (ethanol or acetone) then with distilled water. Follow by conditioning in an aqueous solution.

Calibration
pH electrodes must be calibrated regularly (at least once a day). A calibration should be done with a minimum of two points that fame the expected sample pH. However, for the most accurate results, segmented calibration with at least three calibration points is recommended.

Buffer Best Practices
  • Fresh calibration solution should be used when calibrating a pH electrode.
  • Never pour buffer solution back into the bottle
  • Never calibrate directly into the bottle

Storage
Proper storage ensures that the pH sensitive gel layer remains hydrated and ion rich. Never store the electrode dry or in distilled or non-aqueous solutions. If this happens, ensure that you are conditioning the electrode before use.
