Flocculation is a common separation technique in the biotechnology, petroleum, pulp and paper, and mining industries. Long polymer chains of a flocculant adsorb to small particles, initiate particle bridging and allow the formation of large flocs. Flocculation efficiency is largely determined by mixing time and intensity, effective flocculant type and concentration, dosing rate, solids concentration and particle size. Effective flocculation influences product development and scale-up, downstream separation performance, operating cost and yield.
