On Usage in Water to Produce Personal Care Products

Dissolved ozone application note
Dissolved ozone application note

Ozone measurement in the cosmetics industry is common. Ozone is an oxidizing gas, which can be injected into water in order to remove organics. These organics could create product variations, affecting color, taste and odor. Moreover, ozone is used to sanitize water by destroying any possible microbiological contamination. As dissolved ozone reverts back to harmless oxygen very quickly, it is an ideal sanitization solution for producing personal care products. However, ozone is undesirable at product water point of use, so on-line ozone measurement is vital for monitoring the production water distribution loop.

Ozone has a substantial advantage over chlorine in pure water systems. It destroys organics and micro-organisms better than chlorine and decays to harmless oxygen. Ozone leaves no residual material and it is more effective than chemical sanitization and more economical than thermal sanitization.

This application note explains the detailed processes of ozone usage and measurement in the cosmetics industry and introduces the METTLER TOLEDO pureO3 sensor. The sensor provides ozone measurements in real-time to ensure proper disinfection levels are attained. Paired with the METTLER TOLEDO M800 multi-parameter transmitter or the M300 transmitter, pureO3 sensor technology provides robust, reliable measurement with increased stability in pure water applications. The pureO3 sensor combines advanced design features with robust measurement technology to ensure accurate and reliable measurement down to zero ppb. The sensor has superior performance including easy maintenance and the benefits of METTLER TOLEDO's digital Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM) technology.

This application note covers the following topics:

  • Disinfection with ozone of personal care product water systems
  • Ozone use to sanitize piping systems
  • Dissolved ozone measurement in personal care product water applications

In water applications in the cosmetics industry, ozone measurement is necessary at three critical measurement points of the water system. The first measurement point is after the storage tank to ensure the right concentration of ozone for effective disinfection at the storage tank. The second ozone measurement point is to ensure destruction of the ozone by the UV light and to confirm that the water utilized in production is sufficiently free of ozone. The third ozone measurement point measures the ozone concentration to ensure that adequate levels are achieved during sanitization of the water system when the UV is off.
