With chloride and sulfate being highly corrosive contaminants in power plant waters, the need to measure their levels has increased with the rise in power plant cycling and construction of larger plants with more expensive capital assets.

Most methods of monitoring the levels of these corrosive contaminants have a high cost of operation and acquisition. Additionally, substitute methods, such as degassed cation conductivity, do not provide ppb-level monitoring of individual contaminants, thus reducing their effectiveness in helping to control levels of each ion.

This success story details how a US-based power plant installed the METTLER TOLEDO Thornton on-line 3000CS chloride/sulfate analyzer to monitor contamination levels.

The 3000CS analyzer from METTLER TOLEDO Thornton is an on-line instrument for direct measurement of chloride and sulfate in pure water and power cycle chemistry samples. It is designed for measurement in a range of power plant water applications, including steam quality monitoring at the turbine inlet, condensate monitoring at the condensate polisher, boiler feedwater monitoring, and makeup water quality monitoring.

The 3000CS continuously monitors the highly corrosive chloride and sulfate ions to assist in corrosion control and helps to minimize damage to critical power plant equipment. Early detection of trace levels of chloride and sulfate ions is provided with minimal operator supervision. The analyzer uses microfluidic capillary electrophoresis, an ionic separation technology, to directly measure trace levels of harmful sulfate and chloride ions.

The 3000CS conducts on-line measurements every 45 minutes, which allows you to monitor your water and steam cycle continuously. This chloride/sulfate analyzer enables power plants to catch contamination early, so that corrective action can be taken to avoid unplanned shutdowns and costly repairs.
