Improve Sustainability in the Lab

Guide

Instrument Longevity, Data Stability, Reduced Rework, Diminished Waste

Sustainable practices in the lab include limiting waste and rework as well as prolonging instrument life.

In a productive laboratory, green operations are difficult to maintain. Not only are single-use plastics the mainstay of many analyses, but other liquid and solid waste, often hazardous, accumulates quickly.

With both individuals and organizations striving toward sustainability, scientists need solutions that consider their reality: high throughput workflows involving many instruments, often in a controlled atmosphere; large-scale use of consumables; and the use and generation of toxic substances in bulk.

METTLER TOLEDO's new Sustainability Guide takes a critical look at climate impact. It outlines our own efforts to reduce our climate footprint, both in-house and through our supply chain, and suggests strategies for laboratories to adopt in turn. Instrument lifetime, miniaturized measurements, and the capture and secure storage of complete data sets are emphasized, together with practical examples and further reading.
