- Research Fellow, Merck & Co. in Process Research & Development, collaborating with organic chemists to develop and implement new spectroscopic methods for analyzing chemical reactions.
- Spectroscopy Product and Applications Manager, IBM Corp. Instruments Business Unit, developing novel applications for FTIR product lines including ATR technology for real-time chemical analysis
- Vice President, Spectra-Tech, involved in the development of dedicated FTIR analyzers for non-traditional applications, including real-time reaction analysis. Spectra-Tech was the parent company of a number of key start-ups that were acquired. Dr. Rein was Vice President in the start-ups and then joined the acquiring companies:
- ASI Applied Systems – acquired by METTLER TOLEDO
- SensIR Technologies – acquired by Smiths Detection
- A2 Technologies – acquired by Agilent Technologies
- Currently consulting for METTLER TOLEDO developing technical marketing material for their product portfolio

Dr. Alan Rein, Ph.D.
Technical Marketing Programs Consultant
For six decades, Dr. Rein has been involved in the development, application and/or marketing of scientific instrumentation in the chemical, pharmaceutical, defense, and aerospace industries. His focus has been in the use of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy in real-time measurements and out-of-lab applications. His early collaborations with METTLER TOLEDO personnel and customers led to the eventual formation of the AutoChem group.
Experience
Highlights
In 1989 authored article that introduced the concept of ReactIR to the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. In 1992 co-authored article with Merck demonstrating the first linking of ReactIR and probe technology with METTLER TOLEDO RC1.
