Hand sanitizer formulation and concentration determination

Hand hygiene is crucial to prevent infections by germs and microorganisms among people. To help countries and health-care facilities to adopt alcohol-based hand sanitizers as the gold standard for hand hygiene, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified formulations, which can be produced from two different active ingredients:

a) Using ethanol 80% v/v

b) Using isopropyl alcohol 75% v/v

To learn more about the hand sanitizer formulations recommended by the WHO, and how to determine the concentrations using a density meter download the free PDF.

In addition, glycerol and hydrogen peroxide are further components of the formulations.

For an accurate concentration determination of hand sanitizers and each of its raw components, density measurement is the perfect analytical method. It allows for a quick and precise analysis in each step of the production process of hand rubs, such as:

  • Incoming raw materials: Purity check
  • Mixing / in-process: Control of dilution
  • Final product: Final concentration determination
  • Filling: Determination of filling volume

In this application note, learn how to control the concentration of hand sanitizers (final product) and to ensure it follows the concentrations recommended by the WHO.
