Background

Titrators in combination with sample changers automate and speed up the titration process. These devices can automatically add titrant, detect the end point, perform calculations, change the sample and rinse the electrode in between. However, sampling has still to be done manually.

In this application note, a fully automated titration process, including liquid aliquoting, is used to determine the chloride content of an electroplating bath. The liquid sample is filled into a beaker and the Liquid Handler accurately draws the liquid sample into a long tube. Subsequently, the sample is dispensed into a dedicated beaker, where it is titrated. Electrode rinsing, beaker washings and the addition of auxiliary reagents is fully automated as well.

In this method, the liquid sample never enters the burette of the Liquid Handler. It remains in the sampling tube. Thus, there is less contamination and there is no need to flush the burette after every sample. Moreover, no additional manual titration stand (aliquoting stand) is needed, as the sample is titrated in a dedicated beaker on the InMotion autosampler.

This method is developed using an Excellence Titrator combined with InMotion Pro autosampler.
