Process Gas Analyzers – 5 Problems

Process gas analyzers play a vital role in ensuring the safe running and efficiency of a multitude of chemical production steps. From preventing the development of explosive conditions in reactors, to monitoring nitrogen inerting in storage tanks, to controlling combustion in thermal oxidizers process gas analyzers are critical components.

Many types of process gas analyzer are available and selecting the right one for each application is very important. But whether paramagnetic, NDIR or zirconium oxide analyzers are chosen, shortcomings of each analyzer type must be faced.

In the case of paramagnetic analyzers, slow speed of response is a significant concern. Paramagnetic analyzers' need for sample extraction and conditioning in order to protect the analyzers' measurement cell delays measurements and can lead to slow reaction to process upsets.

Further, the maintenance required to keep extraction and conditioning systems operating can be excessive.

But there is an alternative technology that is rapidly replacing all commonly used gas measurement technologies.

Tunable diode laser (TDL) spectrometers, such as the GPro 500 series, are a fast responding alternative to paramagnetic and other process gas analyzer types.

TDLs offer:

  • In situ measurement
  • Response in 2 seconds
  • Very low maintenance
  • Tolerance of process dust and moisture
  • Coverage of a wide range of gases

This white paper looks at five issues that affect the performance of process gas analyzers and how the GPro 500 circumvents them.
