Sodium Content in Potato Chips Using Sodium Analyzer

Analyze Sodium Content with Multiple Standard Addition Technique Using ISA

Potato chips containing salt (sodium chloride) is one of the favorite foods among the people today. But with the alarming number of people with high blood pressure, the blame goes to the high salt intake. WHO has therefore forced the food producers to declare or even reduce the standardly used salt (sodium chloride) content in food.

Sodium content in food can be determined using various methods like Ion Selective Electrode (ISE), the Mohr’s titration; or indicator test strips. The sodium content is one forth the weight of salt in the food. To calculate the amount of salt in food item, multiply the mentioned sodium content by 2.5.

The application gives the ICE method for the determination of sodium content in potato chips using standard addition technique. The sample and Ion Strength Adjuster (ISA) solution is added and the measurement is acquired.

The sodium content in potato chips can vary significantly and it may be necessary to adapt the method to your specific sample.

The number of additions depends on the sample concentration and the Na+ standard concentration. For good reproducibility, the dispensed amount of sodium standard solution should not exceed 25-35 % of the sample volume used in the determination. Due to the standard addition technique, no calibration is necessary. The technique considerably reduces the operation cost and is very easy to us.
