Is gasoline different in winter?

Winter and summer gasoline are different. Due to the low temperatures, volatile substances must be added to winter gasoline in order to allow a proper combustion; that addition is what makes gasoline in the winter cheaper.
 

How to measure the density of gasoline in winter?

One of the volatile substances added to winter gasoline is butane. The presence of bubbles caused by adding chemicals makes measuring density in winter gasoline difficult.The norm ASTM D4052 describes how to measure winter gasoline with a digital density meter, stating the density determination of winter gasoline to be performed at 15 °C with a repeatability ≤ 0.0001 g/cm³ (standard deviation).

This application note demonstrates how easy it is to avoid the evaporation of low boiling components through sample preparation and a digital density meter, used together with a sample delivery and cleaning unit, obtaining good and repeatable results.
