Cyanocobalamin or vitamin B12 analysis is an application used in the food and beverage industry as well as in academia. It is an essential B vitamin and is classified as water-soluble. Why is vitamin B12 important?

Vitamin B12 is necessary for growth, cell reproduction, production of red blood cells (hematopoiesis), and the production of myelin and nucleoprotein. It also plays an important role in the breakdown or metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and has a role in protein synthesis. A deficiency of vitamin B12 may result in anemia, gastrointestinal problems, or nerve damage. Cyanocobalamin is used to treat pernicious anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency. Food sources rich in this vitamin include fish, shellfish, meats, and dairy products.

What is the spectroscopic method of vitamin B12 analysis?  

With the parameters defined in this application note, vitamin B12 analysis is a straightforward procedure carried out using a UV7 Excellence spectrophotometer from METTLER TOLEDO. The peaks in the absorbance spectum are identified and the corresponding wavelengths are compared to standards set by USP. This allows positive identification of cyanocobalamin.
