Carbonyl in Aldehyde & Ketone - UV Vis Spectroscopy

Spectroscopic Determination of Total Carbonyl Content

This method investigates the determination of total carbonyl content in aldehyde and ketone using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). For more information about this application, proceed to download the page.

How is the total carbonyl content in aldehyde and ketone determined?

The sample is heated under acidic conditions in the presence of DNPH, where it reacts to form hydrazone. This then forms a wine-colored ion when treated with ethanolic potassium hydroxide (KOH). The intensity of this ion is measured at a single wavelength and the value is then automatically converted into the carbonyl concentration using a predefined method on the UV/VIS Excellence Spectrophotometer.

This procedure is proven to be a reliable, repeatable method for the determination of 10-5000 ppm of carbonyl content in aldehyde and ketone. For full equipment, sample preparation, procedure, and results information, please proceed to download the application note below.
