Chloride Content of Lithium Cobalt Oxide based Cathode Material

Method to Determine the Chloride Content of of Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Material

The application describes a method to determine the chloride content of lithium cobalt oxide based cathode material of Lithium ion batteries.

Background

The production of cathode materials used in Li ion battery usually involves a calcination step. The solid precursor salts are mixed and heated. In order to form lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), is mixed with cobalt oxide (Co3O4). The mixture is heated under an oxygen atmosphere to form the active LiCoO2 electrode.

However, the end product is usually not pure and can contain chloride salts like lithium chloride (LiCl). These impurities are considered not to be active in the electrochemical reaction of the lithium ion battery. Therefore, the chloride content of the cathode material is checked after its production.
