The application note describes the titer determination of ½ I2 0.1 mol/L solution using ascorbic acid as a primary standard.

Background

Ascorbic acid is suggested as primary standard for standardization of iodine solutions since it is weighable solid and available in highly pure form. The standardization involves an iodimetric titration in which iodine reacts with ascorbic acid, oxidizing it to dehydroascorbic acid.

This redox titration is monitored using a DMi140-SC combined platinum ring electrode.

Reaction:

C6H8O6 + I2 + 2H2O → C6H6O6 + 2I- + 2H3O+
