By designing a membrane-based “bag” with defined pore sizes, larger molecule organorhodium catalyst is contained within, while smaller molecule reactants, solvents, and product molecules easily flow in and out. This represents an interesting way to perform homogeneous catalysis while isolating and recovering expensive rhodium catalysts and minimizing the presence of trace metal in the final product to mitigate clean-up. Key to successful supramolecular systems is an in-depth understanding of host-guest interactions. Association constant (Ka) strength provides a quantitative measure of host-guest complexation. Online spectroscopic methods offer the potential for real-time direct measurement of nutrients in stirred tank bioreactors. Mid-IR, inline PAT, together with a process information management system (PIMS), resulted in the development of an automated metabolite feedback control system to improve the fermentation process.
