Intelligent Sensor Management – ISM
Beyond Process Confidence
ISM™ is a digital technology for process analytics. Measurements from ISM sensors are highly reliable and help you maintain process consistency. Data and ISM's advanced sensor diagnostics can be easily transferred to wherever needed and support true predictive maintenance planning.
“I can summarize the ISM approach in two words: simplicity and savings.”
Common Challenges with Process Analytical Equipment
You need analytical sensors to ensure production consistency and maintain product quality. And you know issues around analytical sensors can impact efficiency. Some of these issues might be:
- Not knowing if a sensor’s measuring accurately.
- Not knowing if a sensor’s suddenly going to fail in the process.
- Sensor measurements that fluctuate due to electromagnetic interference from surrounding equipment.
- Time-consuming calibration at hazardous measurement points.
- Relying on hand-written notebooks on sensor maintenance history.
- Planning and conducting maintenance with limited resources.
ISM solves all these problems.
High Precision Sensors
If sustaining process consistency is your goal, you need analytical instrumentation that you can fully rely on. ISM sensors are extremely valuable in this regard.
- ISM sensors are resistant to interference and noise.
- ISM sensors withstand challenging process environments.
- ISM predictive diagnostics tell you if a sensor is measuring reliably.
Data from Sensors
You want sensor data from measurement point to control room to remote location. Integrating ISM into your facility's infrastructure is fast and straightforward.
- ISM sensors are immediately ready to measure, without human intervention.
- ISM predictive diagnostics data are available wherever required.
- ISM data enables process automation without complicated data analytics or interpretation.
Sensor Maintenance
Labor is a scarce resource, and you need to prioritize efforts. Sensors should be maintained only when needed and never too late. With ISM, you'll perform the right maintenance at the right time.
- ISM sensor diagnostics predict the exact number of days remaining until maintenance will be required.
- ISM software allows quick, safe and easy sensor calibration away from the process.
- ISM sensors and software both hold full sensor maintenance history and audit trails.

FAQs
What is Intelligent Sensor Management?
Intelligent Sensor Management, or ISM, is a platform developed by METTLER TOLEDO that uses digital technology to improve the performance of our analytical sensors and simplify how sensor data such as measurement results or predictive diagnostics information can be integrated into production facilities, how sensors are handled, and how they are maintained.
What is sensor management?
In process analytics, sensor management refers to how sensors are utilized, maintained, handled, and monitored. Sensor management could include scheduling and conducting sensor maintenance, and ensuring replacement sensors are always available.
What is the main difference between analog sensors and ISM sensors?
An analog sensor and an ISM sensor for measuring an analytical parameter are very similar. They will both have many of the same components and will measure the parameter in the same way. However, whereas an analog sensor outputs an analog signal that is converted into a displayed measurement by the transmitter it is connected to, ISM sensors contain a microchip that makes the calculation and outputs the measurement as a digital signal. Because the signal is digital, it is very robust and is immune to electromagnetic noise and interference. This makes the measurement more accurate than for analog sensors. As well as calculating the measurement, the microchip contains advanced diagnostics tools that predict when sensor maintenance or replacement should be performed.
What are digital sensors and how do they work?
A digital process analytical sensor is one in which the measurement (e.g., pH level or oxygen concentration) is calculated within the sensor and converted from an analog signal to a digital signal. This is achieved through use of a microchip within the sensor.
What are the advantages of intelligent sensors?
Intelligent sensors such as ISM sensors are able to carry out a number of functions that analog sensors cannot. This includes the ability to monitor themselves for maintenance needs, store calibration data, and output other information such as their sensor type and serial number.
What are the working principles of digital analytical sensors?
In digital sensors, the principle for measuring analytical parameters is identical to that of analog sensors; however, the inclusion of a microchip in the sensor provides numerous features and benefits that are not possible with analog sensors.
