Dissolution Kinetics of Calcium Carbonate

Determining the Reaction Rate Using pH-Stat Titration Technique

This application note presents a detailed method to study the dissolution kinetics of calcium carbonate using pH-stat METTLER TOLEDO titrators.

Importance of Dissolution Rate of Calcium Carbonate

The dissolution of solids in liquids is a simpler yet important process to understand with respect to industrial applications. The dissolution of calcium carbonate is of prime importance to geologists and marine scientists since it is the most abundant compound found in the earth and oceanic sediments. Besides, calcium carbonate has a myriad of uses in various sectors such as agro, pharma, and food-based applications. This mandates the precise determination of dissolution kinetics of calcium carbonate.

Determination of Dissolution Kinetics Using pH-stat Titrator

The application note presents the determination of dissolution rate using automated pH-stat titrators Titration Excellence T7 / T9.  The technique encompasses observation of change in pH of the calcium carbonate solution as a function of acid titrant. The kinetics of the chemical process is determined by the acid titrant consumption as a function of time.

This Application Note Includes

  • An introduction to the method
  • Sample preparation and procedures
