This application note describes the determination of calcium in milk by thermometric titration with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The heat of the metal-EDTA complex formation is large enough to be measured by thermometric titration.

Background

Calcium is the most abundant metal in the human body. It is the main component of bones and teeth and is essential for maintaining blood pressure or for muscles contractions. To ensure a sufficient intake of calcium, the calcium content of food products must be known.

Thermometric titration allows for rapid and accurate analysis that can be fully automated with the InMotion™ autosampler and a Thermotrode™.
