Refractometers for Wine

Lightweight, Ergonomic and Weatherproof—Our Portable, Digital Wine Refractometers Deliver Accurate Results in 2 Seconds

Wine refractometers measure the angle of refraction of a light beam that comes into contact with grape juice or wine. Our wine refractometers are easy to use; squeeze a few drops of a grape onto the prism, press the button, and know the sugar content instantly. It's that simple! Results are automatically temperature compensated and converted into up to three of the 10 integrated sugar-related scales, including Brix, Oechsle, Baumé, and more.

FAQs

How do you measure alcohol content with a wine refractometer?

The alcohol content in wine cannot be measured with a refractometer—it is a misconception among many people.

A wine refractometer cannot be used to test the alcohol content but only to test the sugar content of either wine must or finished wine. There is, however, a way to estimate alcohol content from sugar content. You can do this by measuring the sugar content before and after fermentation. Then, through the use of calculations, you can work out the alcohol content of the final wine.

A much faster and more convenient alternative is to use a digital density meter. Our digital density meters will accurately measure your sample's density and automatically convert density to alcohol concentration. The official method to measure alcohol content in wine requires a distillation followed by density measurement of the distillate.

How do you use a wine refractometer?

Using a digital wine refractometer is as simple as ever. Almost anyone can use one by following these three simple steps.

Firstly, make sure the prism is clean. Secondly, add a few drops from a grape onto the prism—approximately 0.3 ml—ensuring it is well covered. Finally, press the button to begin measuring. You'll receive the results in just two seconds.

All our wine refractometers deliver results that are automatically temperature compensated and converted into up to three of the 10 integrated sugar-related scales, including Brix, Oechsle, Baumé, and many more. You can easily toggle through these on the device until you find the number that represents your desired scale.

What does a refractometer measure in wine?

A wine refractometer is used to measure the sugar content (Brix) of grapes used to produce wine. It is ideal for determining the optimal harvesting time during the winemaking process. Thanks to its robustness, size, and ease of use, a wine refractometer can be taken to the field to measure the Brix of grapes straight from the vine.

Using a digital wine refractometer is as simple as ever. All you need to do is squeeze a few drops of grape juice onto the prism, press the button, and you'll receive a Brix result in less than two seconds!
