Lithium-ion batteries are essential to electric mobility, renewable-energy storage, portable electronics, and backup power systems. As demand grows for batteries with higher energy density, faster charging, longer lifetimes, and improved sustainability, understanding their thermal properties is increasingly important.
The thermal properties and behavior of a battery affect performance, degradation, safety, and service life. Analyzing heat generation and the thermal stability of individual components is therefore critical for understanding and preventing thermal runaway.

Thermal analysis techniques play a vital role in the research, development, and quality control of advanced battery technologies. They can be used to investigate individual materials and components, as well as to assess the thermal stability of finished products.
The four main techniques of DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA are particularly effective for investigating temperature-dependent effects such as glass transition, crystallization, melting, purity, viscoelastic behavior, expansion, shrinkage, and decomposition. Evolved gas analysis combined with TGA can also provide important information about decomposition products.

Dr. Ahmet Faik Demirörs
Dr. Ahmet Faik Demirörs obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2010 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University, USA. He has more than 14 years of experience in the characterization of polymers, composites, and functional materials. Before joining METTLER TOLEDO, he worked as a senior scientist and lecturer at ETH Zürich and as a senior scientist at the University of Fribourg. In 2026, he joined METTLER TOLEDO as an application specialist for Thermal Analysis. In his current position, he uses, teaches, and supports DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA instruments at the METTLER TOLEDO head office in Switzerland.
