Innov'ia is a powder formulation and processing company for functional ingredients, serving the food, pharmaceutical, animal nutrition, and healthcare markets.
It develops competitive, tailor-made solutions for functional ingredients, combining a wide range of technologies such as spray drying, granulation, agglomeration, microencapsulation, coating, prilling, and dripping/emulsion.
pH control is essential in many of Innov’ia’s processes, but obtaining reliable pH measurements consistently was a problem. Jean-René Dahéron, Technology Platform Manager at Innov’ia, was frustrated:
"We were having difficulty measuring the pH of liquids in the reactors because we were using a lab-type probe that required a lot of recalibration to get a reliable measurement, and that limited us to measurements on the surface of the reactor. So, we asked METTLER TOLEDO to find a solution to this problem, initially, to equip a mobile unit used by our industrial support team during large-scale preproduction tests."
"We chose to install METTLER TOLEDO equipment consisting of an InPro X1, a housing, and a transmitter with a display. In addition to obtaining reliable measurements, thanks to robust equipment that complies with hygiene and food safety rules, this installation has had two major impacts: the first is a field benefit, with a simplified pH reading on the transmitter and the absence of recalibration during the process.
The second impact is a product benefit with an optimization of our liquid process that has made it possible to obtain a powder with the expected chemical profile, without heterogeneity in the samples taken during manufacturing."
The X-Chip in InPro X1 sensors is a solid pH-sensing element with very high mechanical resistance. It uses the same potentiometric measurement principle as the pH-sensitive glass used in pH sensors, but unlike traditional sensors, the X-Chip is extremely robust and cannot shatter.
Complete Satisfaction
Now, having tested the capabilities and ease of use of the InPro X1, Mr. Dahéron has big plans for the sensor.
"Following this first order, which gave us complete satisfaction in terms of control of our processes and the robustness of the equipment, we decided to place a tailor-made order to equip a high-capacity atomization tower, with a tank twice as large as the one used during industrial tests.
This new equipment will be a real plus for the operational teams who must control the quality of the product."
