What is the difference between static and coupled-in-motion rail weighing?

Static rail weighing measures rail cars while they are stopped and uncoupled on the scale. Coupled-in-motion rail weighing measures rail cars while they remain connected and move slowly across the scale, allowing for faster processing.

What configurations are available for rail scales?

Single draft: For static weighing, a single-draft configuration consists of two scale decks that spaced appropriately so that all wheels and axles (bogies) of the rail car can be positioned on the scale at once.

Multi-draft: A multi-draft process uses a static scale that accommodates a single axle group per weighment. Weights from both axle groups are then summed to provide the gross weight of the rail car.

Can the same scale weigh trucks and rail cars?

Yes. METTLER TOLEDO offers a combination truck and rail weighbridge model that can be used to weigh over-the-road vehicles as well as rail cars.

What can impact the longevity of a rail scale?

Moisture and lightning strikes are key risks to long-term reliable operation of a rail scale. To avoid moisture damage, ensure that the weighing components (load cell network) carry appropriate ingress protection ratings, and that the scale foundation offers adequate drainage. A proven lightning protection system (such as the StrikeSheild™ found on POWERCELL® load cell systems) can help avoid catastrophic damage in the event of a direct hit.

What customizations are available for a rail scale?

Grain dumps: Grating is added to the center of the scale deck to accommodate the offloading of material into tanks, hoppers, and auger systems below.

Filling: Weight-based filling can help to automate dispensing equipment to ensure accurate loading.

What site considerations can help optimize the accuracy of a rail weighing system?

An ideal site will have:

  • Longitudinal grade less than 0.1% for 500 ft (152 m) or the length of the train (whichever is shorter).
  • No track switches, curves, or transitions within five car lengths of the centerline of the rail scale
  • Scale foundation located on soil with compressive strength greater than 4,000 psi
  • Rail cars that are pulled onto the scale will weigh more accurately than those that are pushed onto the scale
