White paste of petroleum jelly is mostly used as an ointment and a protective cream for the skin, which is usually compounded in various cosmetics. The yellow petroleum jelly, on the contrary, is greasy, stringent and known for its adhesive properties. Refined petroleum jelly is safe for consumer use; however, unrefined petroleum jelly may contain harmful ingredients. Therefore, it is essential to monitor the quality of your final products. The dropping point measurement is one of the techniques used to serve this purpose.
Sample preparation is done by melting the substance. It is then transferred into the previously warmed cups, followed by sufficient cooling. It is ensured that the sample is uniformly filled by removing any excess substance with a spatula.
Dropping point measurement is done by heating the sample under a controlled temperature program. When the first droplet of the molten substance escapes from a standardized cup, this is detected as a dropping point measurement.
