DSC Measurements of PPA

Sample

PPA, Amodel, injection-molded parts, normal with 75% inorganic filler

Conditions

Measuring cell: DSC820 with sample changer

Pan: Aluminum standard 40, pierced lid

Sample preparation: First heating run from 35 to 350 C at 20 K/min. The sample was then quench-cooled to room temperature in the sample changer and a second heating run performed under the same conditions

Atmosphere: Nitrogen, 50 cm3/min

Evaluation

Interpretation

In the injection-molded part as supplied (first measurement), the PPA is semicrystalline and the step height of the DSC curve at the glass transition is relatively small. There is practically no cold crystallization. The quench-cooled samples are amorphous and exhibit a clearer glass transition and cold crystallization.

Conclusion

Analysis of the DSC curves provides information on the thermal history, crystallinity and polymer count.
