Question 1

What is a cell counter?

Accepted Answer

A cell counter is a laboratory instrument that measures cell concentration and viability in a sample. Automated versions replace manual methods, such as hemocytometers, and deliver faster, more consistent results.A cell counter is a laboratory instrument that measures cell concentration and viability in a sample. Question 2

What consumables does a cell counter need?

Accepted Answer

DGHM uses a coherent light source (laser) that illuminates the sample composed of cells and the medium in which the cells are suspended. The light scattered from the cells and the medium interfere with one another. The interference pattern is called a digital hologram, which is recorded by the instrument in the digital camera (Fig.1). After specific digital processing, a Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHGM) can be reconstructed (like conventional brightfield microscopy images, with the main difference that it shows the refractive index of the sample, instead of the absorbance). Due to the low light intensity of the DHGM laser, the cellular analysis can be performed without impacting the cells’ status. Using optimized numerical algorithms, pairing DHGM with machine learning (ML) allows further study of the obtained image. The analysis extracts detailed information about morphology or cell structure, enabling viability recognition without the need for staining. This is a distinct advantage over traditional methods, which not only have the potential to alter the sample integrity but can also be time-consuming, error-prone, and subject to intra-user variability.Cell counters need dedicated slides to hold each sample during measurement. Explore our cell counting slides and other CytoDirect consumables to keep your instrument running.

Question 3

Is software available for cell counting data management?

Accepted Answer

No. CytoDirect’s unique combination of machine learning and digital holographic microscopy provide in-depth information on the cells’ refractive index for effortless and robust determination of cell density and viability, without needing a staining step in your workflow.METTLER TOLEDO offers dedicated software for cell counting to manage and store your results. Question 4

What service and support are available for a cell counter?

Accepted Answer

When the measurement is completed, the result overview is displayed. The following data is available:Total concentration of cellsViability percentageLiving cell concentrationDead cell concentrationHistogram with the size distribution of cellsScatterplot with information on cell health (Viability Map)Microscopy image with viable/dead cellsMetadata and method parameters METTLER TOLEDO provides service plans, calibration, and maintenance support for cell counters.
