Conductometric Titration of Latex

Acid-Base Titration of a Latex Sample Containing Carboxylic Acid Groups

Latex, a dispersion of polymer particles in an aqueous solution, has been a component used in a variety of assays.  Latex consists of microscopic polymer particles such as polystyrene. Depending on their applications, the surface of the microparticles is modified by adding acid groups such as e.g. carboxylic group, R-COOH.

To quantify surface chemistry of the latex emulsions, that are modified with acidic groups, acid/base titration is performed by using conductometric indication.

Reaction:

 H3O+ + OH- → 2 H2O

The note describes the acid/base titration of a latex sample containing carboxylic acid groups. The titration is monitored using a conductometric probe
