Benefits of Integrated Conductivity Sensors in Water Treatment Systems

This white paper examines integrated conductivity sensors as a unique solution suited to the needs of power plants monitoring mineral contamination in water. It first addresses the overall role of conductivity as an established analytical parameter for on-line, reliable measurement of water quality through various stages of treatment. It then discusses the improvements that have arrived with the development of integrated conductivity sensors with on-board microprocessors that provide greatly improved accuracy and temperature compensation.

In laying the foundation for the benefits of integrated conductivity sensor use in water treatment systems, the white paper discusses the details of conductivity measurement, including why it is used in water treatment systems and how it functions. The paper then continues to the challenges of taking conductivity measurements in high conductivity waters, versus low conductivity waters. In particular, there are significant differences in the characteristics of conductivity measurements related to polarization tendency, cell constant, measurement voltage and measurement frequency. These differences have traditionally made it impossible to use the same sensor for low conductivity water as for high conductivity water.

As a solution, the white paper recommends the use of the UniCond® integrated conductivity sensor, which offers significant benefits for power plant water treatment systems, including the ability to measure from ultrapure water to brackish waters with a single integrated conductivity sensor.

The white paper examines the integrated sensor design and the effect on conductivity measurement, calibration accuracy, temperature compensation and sensor diagnostics.
