SAP's Open Integrated Factory was showcased at the Hannover Fair of Industry in 2017. It demonstrated how automated production equipment and business software for manufacturing execution and resource planning systems now operate more closely together than ever before.

The installation included robots, printers, conveyors and vision-inspection systems from different suppliers, as well as a WMShigh precision weigh module from METTLER TOLEDO. All devices communicated via Open Platform Communications with Unified Architecture (OPC UA) to avoid the typical break in media communications between industrial Ethernet solutions and office network technology.

OPC UA is a machine-to-machine communication protocol for industrial automation developed by the OPC Foundation.

Easy and fast commissioning

A WMS weigh module inside the Open Integrated Factory was used for completeness control of Internet-of-Things devices assembled on the system. It quickly verified that all mechanical components were mounted. The weigh module communicated with the partner devices and business software via a standard server solution that provides OPC UA connectivity for almost all METTLER TOLEDO weighing devices. Its integration into the OPC UA network of the Open Integrated Factory took only a few minutes. This illustrated just one of many benefits of this future-oriented communication technology.

High-precision weighing made for automation

The WMS weigh modulewith its robust stainless-steel housing and optional IP66 protection is designed for easy integration into machines. It provides robust overload protection against excessive forces, which can occur in case of an automated handling-device malfunction. An internal test weight allows verification of the weigh module’s functionality any time it is needed. If a deviation is detected, the weight is used to recalibrate the weigh module and restore pre-accident measuring performance.
