Solids, Foams, Films, and Fibers – To Be Measured in Different Deformation Modes

TMA measures thermal expansion and effects such as softening, crystallization and solid-solid transitions, which provide insight into the composition of materials and hence their possible applications.

TMA offers the following measurement modes, which permit the analysis of diverse samples:

  • Dilatometry
  • Penetration
  • Tension
  • 3-Pt bending
  • Swelling
  • Volumetric expansion

This tutorial video shows TMA sample preparation for the above measurement modes. For dilatometric and penetration modes we use a PET sample. A punched out piece of transparency film and a thin textile is used for tension mode. We also demonstrate the use of the three-point bending device on a bar of printed circuit board. In the swelling tool we prepare a piece of a gummi bear in water, and finally, for volume expansion mode we use an oil sample.
