  • Thermal properties and stability assessment of polymers
  • Polymer properties influence processing and end use performance
  • Ensure that the properties of the polymer meet specified thermal and physical properties

The most important point before beginning an analysis is to be absolutely clear about the property you want to measure and the results you hope to get. Some of the best practices suggestions are below:

1. Defining the Property

Before starting an experiment, be absolutely clear about the property or effect you want to investigate (e.g., glass transition, melting, decomposition, viscoelastic behavior, thermal stability). This determines the technique, method parameters, and data interpretation.

2. Choose the Correct Technique

Use the technique that best matches the information needed. Selecting the wrong technique can lead to incomplete or misleading results:

  • DSC: Melting, crystallization, glass transition, reaction enthalpy, influence of additives
  • TGA: Composition, decomposition, moisture loss, thermal stability, filler content.
  • TMA: Dimensional changes, expansion, shrinkage, softening, glass transition
  • DMA: Viscoelastic properties, elastic modulus, damping behavior, glass transition

3. Optimize Sample Preparation and Crucible Selection

Proper sample preparation and choosing the appropriate crucible are critical to ensuring representative and reproducible measurements. These factors directly influence heat transfer, atmosphere interaction, and measurement quality.

    4. Control Experimental Conditions and Validate the Method

Carefully define the temperature program, measurement atmosphere (air, nitrogen, oxygen, etc.), data evaluation approach, and method validation strategy.  Reviewing and optimizing these parameters improves accuracy and repeatability.

    Expert Advice

If you have questions about laboratory fundamentals, measurement processes, or instrument selection and operation, we're here to help. Reach out to our team for expert guidance and support.

What's the difference between an analytical balance and a precision balance?

Precision balances offer readability up to 1 mg for general lab use; analytical balances offer readability up to 0.1 mg for high-precision quantitative work; microbalances go down to 0.001 mg for ultra-small samples.

How do I choose the right pipette for my application?

Match volume range to your needs, check accuracy/precision (low CV), consider ergonomics, tip compatibility, and how easy the pipette is to calibrate and maintain.

What's the difference between moisture content and water content, and which method should I use?

Moisture content covers all volatile compounds; water content is specific to water. Moisture analyzers give fast results (2–20 min), Karl Fischer titration is best for high accuracy at low water levels, TGA links moisture to thermal degradation, and drying ovens suit larger sample volumes.

What causes inaccurate UV/Vis spectroscopy or titration results, and how can I prevent them

For UV/Vis — wrong cuvette type, inconsistent path length, skipping the blank measurement. For titration — poor sensor immersion/calibration, incomplete dissolution, wrong titrant-to-sample ratio (aim for 20–80% burette volume).

Which thermal analysis technique (DSC, TGA, TMA, or DMA) should I use to measure a specific material property?

DSC for melting/crystallization and reaction enthalpy; TGA for composition and thermal stability/decomposition; TMA for expansion/shrinkage and softening temperature; DMA for viscoelastic behaviour and damping.
