Rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries function by reversibly inserting lithium ions into electrically conductive solid materials to store energy. Their liquid electrolytes, made by dissolving lithium salts in organic solvents, deliver high electrical conductivity. These batteries are extensively employed in electric vehicles and portable electronics, favored for their superior specific energy, energy density, efficiency, and longer operational and shelf life when compared to other types of rechargeable batteries.

What is NMP?

N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is utilized as a solvent in the process of coating electrodes during battery manufacturing. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), commonly employed as a binder for both anodes and cathodes in the production of lithium, nickel, magnesium, and cobalt batteries, is readily soluble in this solvent.

What Are Lithium Electrolytes?

Lithium electrolytes are specialized chemical substances utilized in lithium-based batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, to enable the transfer of lithium ions between the electrodes during the charging and discharging processes. Typically, these electrolytes consist of lithium salts such as lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF₄), or lithium perchlorate (LiClO₄) dissolved in a blend of organic solvents like ethylene carbonate (EC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and diethyl carbonate (DEC).

How to characterize lithium electrolyte and NMP solvent?

Characterizing lithium electrolyte and NMP solvent involves measuring their physico-chemical properties like density, refractive index, and color measurement using analytical instruments like density meter, refractometer and UV/Vis spectrophotometer. The multiparameter system including these instruments streamlines the process by automatically determining all these parameters in one run.
