Ion-selective electrodes are part of a group of relatively simple and inexpensive analytical tools commonly referred to as sensors. The pH electrode is the most well-known and simplest member of this group and can be used to illustrate the basic principles of ISEs.
The chloride ion selective electrode is intended for measuring chloride ion concentrations and activities in aqueous solutions. Its preferred applications are found in the fields of water, sauces, health drinks, soil, salad dressings, and mayonnaise analysis.
Compared to many other analytical techniques, ISEs are relatively inexpensive and simple to use, with an extremely wide range of applications and concentration ranges.
The solid-state membrane of the Cl ISE is very robust and ideal for use in either field or laboratory environments; however, it has an average lifetime of six months. Cl ISEs can be used in aqueous solutions over a wide temperature range, up to 80 °C.
