This application note will provide a complete solution related to the determination of titer and blank consumption of perchloric acid using a METTLER TOLEDO thermometric titrator.
Method of Analysis
The titer and blank were evaluated applying a linear regression of four titrations of a standard tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane against sample mass. Iso-butylvinyl ether is used as an indicator for this titration. On reaching the end point it undergoes an exothermic polymerization reaction which signifies a sharp increase in temperature.
Procedure
The standard TRIS solution was prepared in glacial acetic acid. These samples were then titrated against perchloric acid. The plot of sample temperature (ordinate) versus volume of titrant added (abscissa) provides the equivalence point.
Data Interpretation
The plot of volume of perchloric acid consumption (ordinate) versus sample mass (abscissa) indicates a gradual increase implying an occurrence of exothermic reaction between TRIS and HClO4. The titer is then computed as the slope of the linear regression whereas the blank is equivalent to the intercept of the straight line on the y-axis.
