Case Study on Using Real-time Microbial Monitoring

Improving process control strategies can ensure timely response to contamination events, consistent product quality and efficient production processes. A key challenge is the delay of results from traditional validated methods, such as plate counts.

This case study describes how Mibelle Group has overcome this challenge through a comprehensive process control strategy that uses real-time microbial detection from METTLER TOLEDO in parallel with validated plate counts.

Mibelle Group has a rigorous plate count process in place at its plants to ensure proper water quality at release before it is used for production. However, the plate count testing method made it challenging to catch any potential contamination event in their water system. After the samples were collected and prepared, a 5-7 day incubation period was required before results became available. In addition, the method and results themselves raised several concerns.

To address the challenge of delayed test results, Mibelle Group assessed their process control strategy for opportunities to streamline and speed up water release. Mibelle Group evaluated the METTLER TOLEDO 7000RMS™ real-time microbial detection analyzer. The 7000RMS analyzer is an on-line process control tool used to complement the validated plate counts method. While plate counts must be used to release water, the 7000RMS analyzer provides real-time information on microbial content in the water sample.
