Free Fatty Acid Determination in Edible Oils and Fats

Method Using Equivalence Point Titration with Auto Titrator

Consuming oils and fats with higher value of free fatty acids FFA can lead to health hazards in consumers. The Regulatory bodies, worldwide, have therefore  set up a standard for the quality check of all the packaged oils and fats. The method is based on titration. In the methods, the oils or fats need to be dissolved in on organic solvent and then the FFA value is to be determined using following reaction.

Reaction:

R-COOH + KOH → R-COO- + K+ + H2O

R-COOH: Free fatty acids

This application is used to determine the content of free fatty acids in edible oils and fats. The sample is dissolved in non-aqueous solvents, the acid content is titrated with KOH titrant and the titration is monitored by potentiometric measurement with a pH sensor. The titration curve is evaluated at the inflection point to determine the equivalence point (EQP).
