Total organic carbon is a measure of the total amount of carbon bound within organic compounds present in a water sample. Rather than identifying individual chemical species, TOC captures the sum of all organic contamination in a single, unified measurement.
In high-purity water applications across the pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and power generation industries, organic contaminants are present only at trace levels, yet even at parts-per-billion concentrations they can have serious consequences. These contaminants include residual cleaning agents from clean-in-place (CIP) procedures, process solvents, and materials leached from pipework, vessels, or membranes.
Because TOC does not distinguish between contaminant types, it functions as a broad-spectrum signal. A rise in TOC can indicate a system breach, a failing purification stage, or chemical ingress, often before any visible effects become apparent. For industries where water purity is directly tied to product quality and regulatory compliance, TOC is a fundamental monitoring parameter.
