FAQ - Moisture Analyzer Calibration

1. What is routine Moisture Analyzer Testing? Why is routine testing important?

Routine testing of a moisture analyzer is the regular check of the heating unit, the weighing unit, and the whole moisture analyzer instrument. By regularly testing and if necessary adjusting the instrument you will ensure consistent and reproducible results for the entire lifetime of your moisture analyzer. Furthermore, routine testing provides documented evidence about the instrument's correct status. Periodic testing is what quality standards such as ISO 9001 require: "Measuring equipment shall be […] verified […] at specified intervals […]".

2. What is the difference between moisture analyzer testing and adjustment? What is Moisture analyzer calibration?

Testing is the determination of a deviation between the measured value and the true value without making any changes. Adjustment is testing plus making the changes (corrective action) so that the measuring device is correct. Calibration is often used to describe either testing or adjustment but it is unclear what action the user actually means. That's why we distinguish between testing and adjusting to be clear about the action.

3. How often should I test my moisture analyzer?

The moisture analyzer should be tested whenever it is installed or relocated and also at regular intervals. This regular moisture analyzer testing frequency depends on the individual risk of the customer. The risk is determined by factors such as criticality of the process, the temperature sensitivity of the sample, the number of samples per day and the customer's level of regulation.

4. Which parts of a moisture analyzer should be tested and how?

A moisture analyzer consists of a heating unit and a weighing unit. Both components should be tested individually as well as together with the following moisture analyzer testing equipment:

  • Heating unit: temperature test with a temperature kit (different kits available for HX/HS/HC and HE type instruments)
  • Weighing unit: balance test (sensitivity) with a calibrated weight
  • Combined test: simulating a real moisture measurement with the SmartCal test substance
