Weighing equipment in explosive areas must fulfill stringent regulatory requirements to ensure process safety. However, some safety concepts, can influence weighing performance and make maintenance a challenge. That is why METTLER TOLEDO designs weighing instruments that combine proven safety in hazardous areas with uncompromised weighing accuracy and performance. Approvals for ATEX, FM, IECEx and local regulations ensure regulatory compliance wherever you operate.

Highest protection level
Accurate and consistent filling, dosing and batching are essential to ensure consistently high product quality. When choosing the right weighing equipment for hazardous areas, the correct classification and the appropriate method of ignition protection must be considered. Installing intrinsically safe weighing instruments ensures accurate and reliable weighing results at highest protection levels.

Safety by design
Intrinsically safe weighing equipment is ideal for weighing in hazardous areas because it keeps the entire system safe – independent from the weighing application. Intrinsically safe technology prevents explosions by ensuring that the energy transferred to a hazardous area is well below the energy required to initiate an explosion. Intrinsically safe systems allow equipment to be used without risk of igniting any flammable gas, dust or fibers that may be present in hazardous areas.

Fast and efficient maintenance
Intrinsically safe technology provides a flexible and modular solution to most industrial applications within hazardous areas. It is possible to communicate with multiple components through specially designed communication elements. One of its greatest benefits is that intrinsic safety enables equipment maintenance within hazardous areas, without the need to interrupt the power supply and to obtain a gas clearance certificate, which is necessary with open flame-proof equipment. This especially applies to instrumentation because fault finding on de-energized equipment is more complex and time-consuming.

Hazardous-Area Equipment Services
Our experienced, factory-trained service specialists make sure hazardous area weighing equipment is safely installed, inspected, maintained and repaired. Our comprehensive service program will help you maximize the return on your investments. Keep your equipment operating to the best of its abilities and rely on our qualified support when and where you need it.

Hazardous-Area Equipment Inspection
METTLER TOLEDO offers visual and detailed inspections for intrinsically safe weighing equipment based on the international IEC60079-17 standard. This standard prescribes guidelines for periodic inspections of equipment in explosive environments:
- Detailed Ex inspection is required at installation and following repairs.
- Visual Ex inspection is a good companion to periodic preventive maintenance and calibration so that you maintain confidence in equipment performance and a historical record of equipment condition.

Thorough Installation and Documentation
Professional installation of hazardous area scales by skilled service specialists makes sure you can safely use your devices from the start. Initial user training supports quick familiarization with the scales and helps to maintain a safe workplace. Comprehensive documentation provides evidence that the installation is consistent with approvals and requirements.

Calibration is the Key to Quality
Calibration determines hazardous area scale performance. With routine scale calibration and adjustment, you can measure safely, ensure compliance and avoid the costs associated with inaccurate measurements. You can also achieve compliance through consistent procedures and adhere to regulations and standards, such as:
- GMP
- NIST Handbook 44 and OIML
- Measuring Instruments Directive (MID)
- ISO 17025
- EURAMET

Maintain a Safe Workplace
Proactively maintaining a safe workplace is a very important job. Special considerations are required when the environment is classified as potentially explosive. Over time, intrinsically safe equipment can be damaged or even degrade, making periodic inspection necessary. We apply a manufacturer’s know-how to the task of inspecting the condition of your intrinsically safe weighing equipment during maintenance and calibration.

Original Spare Parts
If inspection reveals the need to repair your equipment, we can quickly get it back into safe working condition to help you avoid costly downtime. We only use spare parts and procedures that comply with the equipment’s third-party approvals. Our StandardCare and service contract includes repair and ComprehensiveCare in addition covers spare parts. This beneficial equipment “insurance” allows you to keep your costs constant long-term.
