This application note describes the thermometric determination of the titer of barium chloride (BaCl2) and of the blank value using potassium sulfate (K2SO4) as primary standard. A linear regression over 4 different samples enables a simultaneous determination of blank and titer.
Background:
Barium chloride forms an insoluble precipitate when reacting with sulfate ions. The precipitation of barium sulfate is a strong exothermic reaction that can be followed by thermometric titration.
Thermometric titration allows a rapid and accurate analysis that can be fully automated.Thermometric titration follows the course of enthalpy change by measuring the temperature.
In the present method, the temperature rise corresponds to the exothermic formation of the barium sulfate precipitate.
