Photometric Method to Determine the Content of Anionic Surfactants

The application note, describes the method to determine the content of anionic surfactant of low concentration, by titration with a cationic surfactant. The analysis is performed in a two-phase medium and the color change of a mixed indicator is monitored using the DP5 Phototrode.

Background

Surfactants are used in various formulations, raw products, liquid detergents, cosmetic products, lubricants, cooling emulsions etc. They are considered as one of the environmental contaminants. Hence, analysis of surfactant is an important quality criterion in production.

The analysis is performed in a water/chloroform two-phase medium and the color change of a mixed indicator is monitored using the DP5 Phototrode at 520 nm. Due to low concertation of the surfactant, nature of titration curve is different from the standard evaluation i.e. S-shaped curve. Hence, in this case segmented evaluation was used to detect an EQP.
