In this webinar, process safety expert Stephen Rowe, Ph.D. presents Practical Approaches to Improving Process Hazard Analysis and Scale-Up Outcomes. Safety in the development and scale-up of chemical processes involves a number of multi-disciplinary activities ranging from laboratory characterisation of hazards to the implementation of safety measures to protect against, or prevent, harm to an acceptable level of residual risk. Reaction and thermal stability characterisation is a critical foundation for robust and safe scale-up.
The activities in the scale-up process are highly interdependent. The output of reaction and thermal stability characterisation is an input to process hazard analysis. If any stage in scale-up is deficient, the whole process is compromised.
This short presentation summarises the key scale-up steps but focuses on optimising the knowledge flow (not just data flow) from R&D / Process Development into the Process Hazard Analysis (PHA). Having the right data as input to the PHA is important, but knowing how to use the data in the PHA is even more important.
The presentation includes case studies incorporating reaction calorimetry and thermal stability examples. The aim is to create greater awareness in development chemists of how their data will be used and therefore how they can optimise the efficiency and effectiveness of the PHA through some small changes in the outputs they provide.
