White Sugar Solution Color - UV Vis Spectroscopy

ICUMSA™ GS 2/3-10 Method of White Sugar Solution Color Determination

This application note concerns the color determination of white sugar in the crystalline, powdered, or very pure syrup form using a multi-parameter spectroscopic and refractometric system. To find out more, please download the method below.

How is the color of white sugar determined?

Using a UV5 Excellence spectrophotometer, and RM40 refractometer, an error-free analytical workflow can automatically calculate ICUMSATM color. This method is valid for colors up to 50 ICUMSATM (IU) color units and it is based on the international ICUMSATM method GS2/3-10 (2005): "The Determination of White Sugar Solution Colour".

First, the refractometer and spectrophotometer are connected to the PC software. After measuring the Brix value on the refractometer, the sugar concentration is automatically calculated and transferred to the UV Vis spectrophotometer. There, the final ICUMSATM value is calculated and shown immediately on the instrument's screen. For all equipment, method and results information, download the application note below.
