In nickel smelting, measuring pH is important at different stages, especially during leaching and managing wastewater. The best pH range for extracting nickel from laterite ores is between 1.5 and 4.0. This acidic environment helps dissolve nickel and makes it easier to extract. Deviations from this range pose significant problems:
- Too high pH: Leads to iron hydroxide formation and nickel solution contamination.
- Too low pH: Results in costly, unnecessary sulfuric acid usage, alongside reduced nickel recovery and potential regulatory non-compliance.
However, measuring pH in the smelting process can be tricky due to high temperatures, solid particles in the mixtures, and harsh chemicals that can damage pH sensors. To overcome these challenges, operators can use strong, high-temperature pH probes and sensors that can withstand tough conditions. They can also filter out solid particles before testing the pH and regularly maintain and calibrate their pH meters to ensure accurate measurements.
