Lab Safety – Collection of Knowledge Material

Maintaining a safe laboratory environment requires attention not only to how and where instruments are installed, but to how they are used, and by whom. It also necessitates careful storage and use of hazardous substances, incorporation of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) into workflows, and preventive measures that allow quick reaction to accidents.

Our knowledge collection of guides and a poster offers advice on keeping yourself and your colleagues safe by the use of proper PPE, as well as how automation solutions at varying scales may support your work. Download it now to benefit from the suggestions.

While wearing proper PPE, ensuring that you follow best practice for your samples and experiments, and only using equipment for which you have received adequate training are an essential basis for laboratory work, always following the recommendations below will keep you and your labmates protected:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the laboratory you are working in, and follow its safety procedures.

  2. Always wear the right attire, as well as appropriate PPE for your workflows.

  3. When preparing for an analysis, estimate the potential hazards from biological or chemical substances. Take measures to prevent mishaps and clean up using appropriate procedures if they occur.

  4. Have a clear understanding of basic measuring techniques and the operating principles of the equipment you are going to use. Ensure that it is suitable for your application, clean and free of contamination, calibrated and properly situated for your experiment. Place it in a containment device if required.

  5. If you often perform demanding activities such as prolonged repetitive tasks or applying meaningful force to your arms or hands, make sure to rotate between different workstations.

  6. Take short breaks to stretch, move and relieve muscles if you are sitting at a desk or standing at your work station for extended periods of time.

  7. Ensure that your working position is appropriate – adjust the height of the bench and use bench cutouts for knee and foot clearance.

  8. Position your tools and materials in easy reach and sight. Remove unnecessary supplies from the work area.

  9. When working at your computer make sure to have neutral neck, shoulder and back postures.
