Major safety concerns in industrial plants are fires and explosions. The areas in which an explosive gas atmosphere exists or is likely to exist are defined as “Hazardous Locations.” Process industries operating in hazardous locations have an obligation to conduct a risk analysis or hazard and operability study (HAZOP) and to classify their hazardous areas.

Area classification methods provide a description of the hazardous material that may be present and the probability that it is present, so that the appropriate equipment may be selected and safely installed. The local inspection authority has responsibility for defining a Class, Zone (or Division), and Group classification for specific areas.
