Reduce Total Cost of Ownership

Reduce Total Cost of Ownership

Gravity Fall metal detection systems can lower the total cost of ownership though Automatic Test System and Reduced Test mode, as well as through seamless integration with other inline processing equipment. Emulation technology allows operators to manage the metal detector remotely to improve operator efficiency and worker safety and eDrive delivers enhanced sensitivity to improve quality processes and support compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Solutions for Hazardous Locations

In some manufacturing locations, the presence of flammable substances and potentially explosive atmospheres represent a significant source of danger. For environments subject to risk from potentially flammable dusts, our Profile Gravity Fall metal detection systems are cETLus-certified, fulfilling the requirements of Class II Division 2 / Class II Zone 21 Hazardous locations. These systems are offered in addition to the existing ATEX & IECEx compliant metal detection systems in our range.

Minimize the Risk of Product Recalls, Reduce Waste

Minimize the Risk of Product Recalls, Reduce Waste

Our Profile Gravity Fall metal detection systems are equipped with eDrive™ to deliver enhanced sensitivity to all metal types. The combination of maximum vertical metal detection capability through eDrive and efficient rejection systems from Y-Valve, Sealtite and Open Diverter solutions minimizes the risk of product recalls and leads to increased operational efficiency. Highly stable, reliable performance with in-built environmental and noise immunity features helps eliminate false rejects.

Test Samples to Verify Performance of Your Metal Detector

We provide a range of certifiable test samples to assist your metal detection testing processes. These are available in a selection of materials, sizes and carriers for any metal detection application, including conveyorized systems, vertical and gravity fall metal detection systems and pipeline systems. Having the correct test pieces to conduct the testing supports accurate and consistent performance verification processes for compliance and due diligence requirements.

Sample FAQ

How do Gravity Fall metal detection systems work?

Gravity Fall metal detection systems are suitable for the inspection of any free-flowing powder or granular products such as coffee, flour, milk powder, dried fruits and peanuts. The product flows through the production line and free-falls under gravity through a small metal detector aperture, achieving high sensitivity. On detection of metal, a fully automatic, high-speed reject device diverts the contaminated product, isolating it from the main product flow.

How do I choose the most suitable Gravity Fall metal detection system?

Gravity fall metal detection systems are designed specifically for the inspection of free-falling powders and granular products in non-pressurized applications with different reject devices depending on the application. Y-Valve Gravity Fall metal detection systems are suitable for the inspection of powders and granular products. The Y-Valve's quick release and captive reject mechanism simplifies cleaning procedures, ideal when product changeovers are frequent and when regular cleaning between production batches is required.

Sealtite Gravity Fall metal detection systems feature an innovative design to provide a dust-tight seal. This virtually eliminates the escape of un-contaminated product into the reject channel, reducing product waste. Sealtite technology is ideal for inspection of high value, dusty products in explosive environments and applications where insertion space is limited.

Open Diverter Gravity Fall metal detection systems provide a cost effective solution for non-dusty products, and can be upgraded to Sealtite standards retrospectively if required. This system is best for non-dusty granular products where insertion space is limited.

How can a Gravity Fall metal detection system boost productivity?

METTLER TOLEDO Safeline's Profile technology allows manufacturers to reduce the frequency of routine performance monitoring tests through Reduced Test Mode and decrease the time taken to conduct performance monitoring tests through its Automatic Test System (ATS) – boosting productivity on the production line

Reduced Test Mode monitors the metal detector's performance to a level of certainty that the frequency of routine performance monitoring can be significantly reduced, subject to quarantine periods.

ATS decreases the time taken to conduct performance monitoring tests by >80% (from 3-5 minutes per line, to under 30 seconds per line).

In some cases, depending on the testing protocol undertaken by your business, Reduced Test Mode and ATS can lead to significant uptime advantages, improved overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and cost savings – all highly desirable attributes in today’s demanding production environments.

Does METTLER TOLEDO Safeline supply Gravity Fall metal detectors that are ATEX/IECEx compliant for explosive atmospheres?

If operating in a potentially explosive atmosphere, certain Gravity Fall metal detection systems can be supplied to comply with ATEX/IECEx regulations. cETLus-certified systems can also be supplied, fulfilling the requirements for Class II, Division 2 / Class II Zone 21 hazardous locations. Please discuss your requirements with your local sales representative.

How can a Gravity Fall metal detector enhance worker safety?

METTLER TOLEDO Safeline Profile Gravity Fall metal detection systems can contribute to safer working practices in food manufacturing environments.

By reducing the frequency of metal detector testing using new Reduced Test Mode technology, there is a corresponding reduction in the number of ladder climbs required by an operator to conduct the test, either to drop the sample through the aperture, or to access the HMI to run the test routines.

Emulation, another feature available on our Profile metal detectors, allows the metal detector HMI to be controlled from a variety of networked devices such as a tablet or mobile phone, again reducing the need to work at height if the HMI is installed in an awkward location, as is the case in many dry product inspection applications.

ATS virtually eliminates the need to work at height to conduct most routine performance monitoring tests, and the requirement for line operators to reach across installed equipment to drop the test samples through the aperture of the metal detector.
