While several techniques are available to characterize droplet and particle systems, processes in which gas bubbles or multiple phases exist present unique challenges. Crystals that coat the surface of an air bubble can lead to unwanted agglomeration. And an oil/water system with oil droplets dispersed in a continuous water phase and water droplets suspended in each oil droplet may be difficult to measure using an off-line technique.

Characterization of systems containing gas bubbles or multiple phases can be done using a combination of FBRM® and PVM® technologies. For laboratory applications, Lasentec® D600L or S400 probes can be used for optimal quantitative and qualitative analysis. In production or process vessels, a Lasentec® D600P, D600S/T, or D600R probe provides a thorough understanding of the particulate system as it exists in process.
