How frequently should my pipettes be calibrated?

The frequency of calibration depends on many different factors.  At a minimum, we recommend calibrating a pipette at least once a year. One should consider how often the pipettes are used, the required precision needed for your experiments or application, and the amount of risk you might take if those results are inaccurate.  If you have a high level of need for accuracy, then it is recommended to calibrate your pipette either every three months or six months to avoid potential failures.

Will my pipette be serviced onsite or in a depot/calibration lab?

Pipettes can be serviced either onsite or in our calibration lab.  This decision should be discussed with our service engineers who can provide the expertise if onsite service can meet your needs. For customers who have very tight tolerances, those can be met better in a calibration lab.  If it is necessary for it to be done onsite, then an environmentally controlled lab is required.

What is the difference between calibration and adjustment?

Calibration is the process of testing your pipette on a balance or some other authorized method by ISO 8655:2022.  The calibration process is comparing the results of your pipette to a known standard so that it can be traced.

If a pipette or any other device does not meet the requirements of a calibration then an adjustment can be made.  For example, if a pipette fails you can adjust it so that it passes. Most pipettes cannot be adjusted during as found calibration as this is a way to maintain traceability of a device. Pipettes can only be adjusted during the as-left or as-returned portion of a service.

What is the difference between calibration and preventive maintenance?

pipette calibration and preventive maintenance

Calibration is the process of taking measurements on a balance and comparing it to a known standard to determine the accuracy of the pipette.  Preventive maintenance should be done at least once a year to replace worn parts and to clean and maintain all parts of the liquid end. Pipettes have known wear and tear, and if preventive maintenance is not performed, they will be more prone to failure.  Performing regular preventive maintenance will prolong the life of your pipette. All preventive maintenance includes visual inspections, cleaning, and functional testing.  METTLER TOLEDO's pipette service includes preventive maintenance and calibration at the same event and guarantees that pipettes return in top performance every time.
