How do you measure alcohol content with a wine refractometer?

The alcohol content in wine cannot be measured with a refractometer—it is a misconception among many people.

A wine refractometer cannot be used to test the alcohol content but only to test the sugar content of either wine must or finished wine. There is, however, a way to estimate alcohol content from sugar content. You can do this by measuring the sugar content before and after fermentation. Then, through the use of calculations, you can work out the alcohol content of the final wine.

A much faster and more convenient alternative is to use a digital density meter. Our digital density meters will accurately measure your sample's density and automatically convert density to alcohol concentration. The official method to measure alcohol content in wine requires a distillation followed by density measurement of the distillate.

 

How do you use a wine refractometer?

Using a digital wine refractometer is as simple as ever. Almost anyone can use one by following these three simple steps.

Firstly, make sure the prism is clean. Secondly, add a few drops from a grape onto the prism—approximately 0.3 ml—ensuring it is well covered. Finally, press the button to begin measuring. You'll receive the results in just two seconds.
